Wildfires in the western United States were raging once more in the summer of 2021, sending a plume of smoke barreling across the country. I knew from years past that when it reached New York, we would have intense sunsets from the dirty air.
On July 22, 2021, the smoke produced a spectacular sunset from Gowanus, Brooklyn, with the Statue of Liberty silhouetted against the orange bands of color on the surface of the sun caused by the wildfires. I shot this photo from the ninth floor window of my apartment in Brooklyn, not knowing that the sun would line up perfectly with the statue.
As I watched through my viewfinder at the sun falling directly behind the statue, I had a euphoria that you only get with a great moment in life. It wasn't just the photograph, it was a great moment in life, witnessing a spectacular moment in time.
