Haunting drawings on the Berlin Wall are saved in a park where the wall once stood, separating the German capital into its East and West cold war division.
I travelled to Berlin for the fifth anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union during the weekend of November 9, 2014. The drawings were unveiled in their new displays in parks around the unified capital, a permanent reminder of a time that split families and was the ultimate symbol of the post-World War II Cold War between Russia and the West.
The Wall cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany from 1961 to 1989, with as many as 200 killed in escape attempts. I always felt this could have been a portrait of one of those killed in the attempt. It was amazing how a piece of wall had so much influence on history.
